Black Noh Snare is a sampled snare drum with 9 velocity layers, every velocity layer has 8 random-robin samples.

This snare drum was recorded with a sm57 mic on top and a sennheiser 421 mic at the bottom. Most controls can be set independently for both microphones.

Play MIDI note D1/38 and that's it. There are rim-shots, they get triggered by velocities of 121 and above, so don't go painting 127s and come complaining about the clicky sound...

This particular snare model is generally relatively bright and has little low end, the +punch module will bring some serious thump into its sound.

The Silk controls let you torture the attack phase of the snare, for each microphone independently. Turn to the left for more click, turn to the right for more silk.

How to add this to Ableton as a plugin?

I have copy and pasted it into and it shows up, but it does not make any noise at all, I have copied and pasted both the folder containing the mse and the dll into my program's folder but the plugin shows up and I can click on it, but it does not make any noise.

Horrible. It sounds like it's been sampled from a car repair workshop while someone has been attempting to remove a brake disc with a mallet. Nothing like any snare that I've ever experienced but should have at least included the option of mixing in a snare rattle. I deleted it ASAP.

Very nice sound, clean, easy to use. I like the snare and the kick a lot. Thanks!

Solved: click Cancel (not Move to Trash), click on the Apple Menu, System Preferences, Security & Privacy, Allow Anyway

You said don't come crying, but I don't even hit full velocity, but a clicky sound follows. I want to use this so bad but, that sound ruins everything.

Plays fine but each time you close it and open it the sliders are all the way at the top (using reaper), the sound has changed and is saved. Minor issue or that's the way it should work and I'm a dumb ass :>)

Just use JS: MIDI filter (default reaper plugin) before this plugin. Sometimes some MIDI events change FX parameters (I know it is strange).

Love all the great Sounds you Developers have given us, the spirit of your creativity lives on through us in our music. It's inspirational, and brings new life the closer I get to a real sound. And so far all the Drum VST's here at VST4Free have been stellar.

Hands down, one of the best snares I've ever used. Great job. If I were to change anything, I would make the root note middle C or I'd make every note on the keyboard play the same thing. Otherwise, I have to transpose it in FL Studio to use it in a sequencing pattern.

Plugin does not work for me. I loaded the .dll file, the UI shows up, but no sound.. I am guessing it can't find the samples?

You need to copy and paste the whole zip content, not only the .dll file.

Copy and paste it where? Every time I download a vst it says "cant find instrument" even though I extracted other files to the same location as the Dll.

You should have the .dll along the "Black Noh Snare.instruments" folder that contains a .mse file. Keep the exact structure from the zip to your vst folder and it should work...

I extracted the dll and the mse file to a specific"BNS" folder and it still says " cant find instrument. Very frustated... lol, Steve Hunt.

Be sure to let the mse file inside the "Black Noh Snare.instruments" folder and don't rename anything of course. Like I said before, extract the zip to your plugin folder just like it is...

I feel that having the rimshot at a separate note number would be a more elegant solution. Idea for an update?

It's demo sounds amazing but remember to use the velocity layers wisely as the high peaks of velocity are reversed for rimshot, it says on the page don't come crying to me because you are hitting the 127 layer of velocity and are hearing a rimshot.... more or less in other words, it has 9 velocity layers which are each it's own sample, I want to give this one a whirl since i play metal like in the audio demo's and lack the skill set to be a drummer.

I know, it's very limited. But it's predestined for modern metal, here's a really bad demo mix using only (!) the Black Noh. :) https://soundcloud.com/chokehold/black-noh-snare-demo-iv

Not bad sound but it doesn't have too many options.
